Barking and Dagenham College wireless Network for Visitors

TYPES OF WIRELESS ACCESS & WHICH SHOULD YOU USE?

  • bdcopenzone Network This is for external visitors who require access to the Internet ONLY. Access to College’s internal resources requires an alternative access method, this should be requested from the ILCT Helpdesk via a staff member. To connect follow the instructions below.
  • GUEST Network This is primarily for the College staff and students using private laptops. External visitors will be able to connect to this network but access to the Internet will be filtered in accordance with the College’s access policies. To connect follow the instructions below, substituting “GUEST” with “bdcopenzone” when selection is required.
  • “BDCWIFI” Network External visitors will not be able to connect to this Network.

WHAT IS NEEDED FOR WIRELESS ACCESS?

A visitor login credentials is required for wireless access – this is valid for two days and it is obtainable from the ILCT Helpdesk sponsored by a staff member at the College.

Typical procedure to connect to “bdcopenzone” Wireless Network for Windows 7

1 View available wireless networks by clicking on the Wireless signal strength icon in the task bar and select the “bdcopenzone” network and click on “Connect” button.

2 If you open a browser, the Barking and Dagenham College’s GUEST portal page should load automatically regardless of your browser’s home page setup as long as it is not an “https” site. Follow the on screen instructions to connect. The following screens should be seen while attempting to register.

3 Click on “Please click here to connect to the network” to proceed.

4 Enter your login details and click on “Login” button.

5 Tick the “I agree to the Acceptable Use Policy” and click on the “Complete Registration” button.

6 The following screens should then follow – registration takes less than a minute. If the following screen is displayed for longer than 2 minutes, please restart the process (normally the process takes 40 seconds). If unsuccessful on the subsequent attempt(s), ask your sponsor to contact the ILCT Helpdesk.

7 Once network access is granted, please close all instances of the browser and open the browser again. You should now have access to the Internet.

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • Ensure that you are connected to the “bdcopenzone” wireless network
  • Ensure that you are visiting an “http” website and not an “https” one otherwise the login page will not display (Google, Yahoo and Bing use HTTPs by default even if you type “http://” at the start) – www.bdc.ac.uk or www.bbc.co.uk can be used without issues.
  • Ensure to tick the “I agree to the Acceptable Use Policy” before clicking on “Complete Registration” button.
  • Ensure there are NO Proxy settings which may have been preconfigured possibly by your company if your laptop is not privately owned.
  • If the registration fails, please close the browser and repeat the procedure before calling the Helpdesk.
  • If still troubled, please contact the ILCT Helpdesk via your sponsor.
